HYDROGEN AND HEALTH

Hydrogen water and healthy hydration

Questions and answers about hydrogen water: use, amounts, safety, storage, pH, oxidation and how hydrogen works.

Hydrogen Water — For Health

Can children, pregnant women, and older people drink hydrogen water?

Yes. Hydrogen-enriched water helps maintain a level of oxidation considered appropriate for good health. It has no contraindications.

Can animals drink hydrogen water?

Yes, but their water should be replaced at least every 6 hours because hydrogen gradually escapes from it. Ideally, offer fresh hydrogen water each time. In Japan, specially packaged hydrogen water is even sold for pets.

Does taking hydrogen water give the body more energy?

When our level of oxidation is high, the body is unable to convert food into energy, resulting in an additional increase in oxidative stress. The antioxidative charge of hydrogen water helps to regulate the level of oxidation in the body, allowing food to be converted into energy instead of being stored as fat. So the answer is yes.

How much hydrogen water is recommended to achieve beneficial effects?

Studies have shown an effective daily dose of 0,5 to 1,6 mg or more of H2. If the concentration in your water is 1 mg/L (equivalent to 1 ppm, parts per million), two litres will provide 2 mg of H2. The effective concentration may vary from person to person.

How soon might the effects of drinking hydrogen water become noticeable?

More energy, better hydration, improved general well-being, better digestion and more restful sleep may be noticed almost immediately. Larger effects may become apparent after a few weeks or even months, especially if oxidative stress, a cause of most diseases and premature aging, is reduced.

Does more hydrogen gas mean more benefits?

Research has shown that a certain minimum amount is needed to achieve positive health effects, which may vary from individual to individual. It is important to note that the amount of hydrogen cannot be overdosed, as it does not accumulate in the body, but the potential excess is simply exhaled. No matter how much hydrogen water you consume, you cannot reach the maximum recommended value. Many examples have clearly shown that higher amounts of hydrogen produce better or greater effects and health benefits.

Is it possible to introduce too much negative antioxidant charge into the body by drinking hydrogen water?

No. Problems arise when the body lacks a negative charge. When there is too much, electrons “discharge” through the skin. The problem therefore occurs when we “discharge” too much, resulting in harmful oxidation; drinking hydrogen water prevents this.

Can hydrogen water help me lose weight?

When our level of oxidation is high, the body cannot convert energy into food because burning fat causes further oxidation. The antioxidant charge of hydrogen water helps lower oxidation, enabling the metabolism to convert fat into energy. However, the body does not lose fat deposits unless we burn more calories than we consume.

Does hydrogen water contain calories?

No, hydrogen water doesn't contain calories.

Is hydrogen or hydrogen water safe?

Hydrogen gas is very safe even at concentrations far higher than those used in therapies. Its safety was demonstrated in the late 19th century, when it was used to detect gunshot wounds in the intestine without toxic effects or irritation, even to sensitive tissue. Since 1943, hydrogen gas has also been used in deep-sea diving to prevent decompression sickness. Hydrogen is natural to the body: our intestinal microbiota produces it after a fibre-rich meal, another benefit of eating fruit and vegetables. In short, hydrogen gas is natural and safe for the body, rather than a foreign or unusual substance that can only be synthesized in a chemical laboratory.

Does hydrogen water also have effects when applied to the body, skin and scalp?

Yes. It removes free radicals from the skin. Hydrogen water can be applied with a cloth or directly to the skin and leave on for a few minutes.

Is it true that very sick people have acid pH values in their blood?

Healthy blood pH ranges between 7,35 and 7,45, with blood pH strictly controlled. In physiology, a person with blood pH 7,1 is attributed to acidosis, although 7,1 is actually alkaline to the pH scale. Very rarely people have a blood pH close to 7. If blood pH drops below 7, the body will not survive long. Almost every sick person has an alkaline pH value of blood, although some may suffer from acidosis. Some diseases can also cause alkalosis, which means increased blood pH. Changes in blood pH are caused by the disease and not caused by it. Low blood pH, which may cause serious body damage, should be corrected as soon as possible.

How does blood maintain an alkaline pH value?

The body uses three main systems to maintain normal blood pH:

  • Buffer components (e.g. proteins, phosphates, etc.)
  • Respiratory system (CO2 removal)
  • Renal system (elimination or reabsorption of bicarbonate HCO3–)

When the body receives or produces acid, it is quickly neutralised by the "buffer" components in the blood. The main buffer is the bicarbonate system. CO2 dissolves in the blood and forms carbonic acid that forms bicarbonate and hydrogen ions. If the blood pH is too low, more CO2 is exhaled, reducing the amount of hydrogen ions and increasing the pH. If we breathe too much CO2, the amount of hydrogen ions increases and the pH decreases. The need to breathe is due to the need to remove CO2 in order to prevent a decrease in blood pH. In general, there is enough oxygen in one breath of air to hold the body for about a minute, but inhale approximately 12 times per minute to eliminate CO2. Healthy people consume only about 5% of oxygen per breath, and people with lung diseases often need additional oxygen. Inability to breathe and breathe can also lead to changes in the pH of the blood due to the inability to remove CO2 which may lead to respiratory acidosis.

Hydrogen Water — Technical Issues

What is hydrogen water?

Hydrogen water or hydrogen enriched water is water (H2O) containing dissolved hydrogen gas (H2) similar to aerated beverages containing dissolved CO2 or oxygen water dissolved O2. Hydrogen water can be prepared with a hydrogen water generator, by dissolving hydrogen tablets and the like.

When were the therapeutic benefits of hydrogen first discovered?

The earliest report of the medicinal properties of hydrogen gas dates to 1798, when it was used to treat inflammation. Scientists paid greater attention to it in 2007, when Dr Ohta and a group of researchers published an article on the benefits of hydrogen gas in Nature Medicine.

Why does hydrogen have such high antioxidant power?

To generate hydrogen water, it is important to use a device with a membrane that separates oxygen from hydrogen and allows only hydrogen into the water we drink. Without a membrane, we would also consume active oxygen, an oxidant. In that case, water with a high mineral content would be needed to achieve an effect. The membrane allows a high antioxidant charge even in water with low mineral content.

Hydrogen gas does not dissolve very well in water; then how can it be sufficiently useful in water?

Although hydrogen is poorly soluble in water (1,6 mg/l), it is important to note that molecular hydrogen is extremely light. It is therefore necessary to compare the number of molecules, not grams. For example, take vitamin C (176,2 g/mol) which weighs 88 times more than hydrogen gas (2 g/mol). Hydrogen water with a concentration of 1,6 mg/l has both more therapeutic molecules than 100 mg vitamin C. The therapeutic efficacy of such hydrogen concentrations has also been demonstrated by studies.

Does dissolved hydrogen gas escape from the water?

Hydrogen gas begins to escape from water immediately, but it does not disappear all at once. How long it remains depends on the exposed surface and on mixing. Several hours or more may pass before the concentration falls below the therapeutic level. This is similar to carbonated drinks containing carbon dioxide (CO2). Nevertheless, it is recommended to drink hydrogen water as soon as possible to maximize its therapeutic properties.

What is the best way to transport and store hydrogen water?

Hydrogen water should be sealed in a bottle for transport and storage without air.

Can hydrogen water be stored in a refrigerator?

Yes, but it must be stored in a hermetically sealed bottle so that it does not lose hydrogen during cooling.

How long does hydrogen water last?

Hydrogen water retains its antioxidant properties for six to eight hours; in a hermetically sealed bottle without air, there is no time limit.

Does hydrogen water lose hydrogen when shaken?

A completely full, airtight bottle can be shaken without loss. A bottle that is not completely full will lose hydrogen if shaken vigorously.

The chemical formula for water is H2O. Does it not contain hydrogen in itself?

The water molecule (H2O) contains two hydrogen atoms bound to an oxygen atom, which is different from hydrogen gas (H2) where two hydrogen atoms are bound to each other. In hydrogen water there is therapeutically important molecular hydrogen available as dissolved hydrogen in diatom form. As such, it is in decoupled form and has proven therapeutic benefits.

Does the oxygen-rich water mean it's acidic?

If water were rich in positive hydrogen ions (H+), it would be acidic. In the case of hydrogen water, we are talking about neutral hydrogen gas (H2), where two hydrogen atoms are bound together. It is therefore water with dissolved molecular hydrogen (H2), which is a neutral gas and does not affect the acidity of the water.

Is it true that the addition of hydrogen into water produces hydrogen peroxide?

Water (H2O) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) have different chemical formulas, the latter having additional oxygen. The addition of hydrogen to water does not produce hydrogen peroxide, as hydrogen gas only dissolves in water without reacting with water molecules. Thus, hydrogen water and hydrogen peroxide are completely different substances and hydrogen peroxide cannot be used to produce hydrogen gas or hydrogen-rich water.

Is hydrogen water the same as alkaline water?

No. Alkaline water contains large amounts of dissolved minerals and usually has neither an electrical charge nor active hydrogen. Only “ionized alkaline” water has an antioxidant electrical charge and some dissolved hydrogen, although most of its electrical charge comes from ionized minerals. These do not have a useful antioxidant charge. Because of the excess minerals and the high pH that results from them, long-term consumption of this type of water is not recommended.

Can drinking alkaline water neutralize excess acid?

Alkaline water has low alkalinity and cannot neutralize much acid. Many notice that even a small amount of soda can significantly reduce the pH of alkaline water. For better understanding: one teaspoon of bicarbonate soda (sodium bicarbonate) can neutralise the same amount of acid as 10.000 litres of alkaline water with pH 10. This is the main reason why health professionals were skeptical about "alkali ionized water". It was only around the year 2007 that the benefits of this water were attributed to dissolved hydrogen gas.

What is the pH of hydrogen water?

Hydrogen water pH is between 7 and 7,5, which is very similar to blood pH. Hydrogen in water increases pH by half a point. Water intake with neutral pH is important for the proper functioning of the body. Although hydrogen water is not alkaline, it has a powerful alkalinizing effect, as it helps neutralize the acidity in our body. The main cause of body acidification is oxidation or oxidative stress.

Does ionised water taste different from ordinary water?

The taste is somewhat different: more diffuse and lighter.

Does hydrogen clean the water?

No, we need to use drinking water to generate hydrogen water.

What does ORP mean?

ORP is an oxidation-reduction potential and is measured in millivolts which may be positive or negative. "Oxidized" means positive electrical charge and stealing electrons. "Reduced or antioxidant" means that it has a negative electrical charge and gives away electrons.

Is hydrogen-rich water still H2O?

Yes. The formula of water does not change with hydrogenation, although the way molecules are combined changes. Normal water has clusters from 12 to 14 H2O molecules. Hydrogen-rich water has smaller clusters, usually containing six molecules, giving hexagonal water. Each cluster of six H2O molecules captures a hydrogen molecule through an ion link that it transmits to our cells. All hydrogen-rich water is hexagonal due to the electrical charge that causes these clusters to form. However, not all hexagonal water is oxidised as hexagonal water can also be obtained by activating water by other means.

Is hydrogen water suitable for cooking?

No, because hydrogen evaporates when the water boils and hydrogen water turns back into ordinary water. Nevertheless, hydrogen water heated up to boiling retains hydrogen and its electrical charge. You can therefore still use hydrogen water to make tea.

Isn't hydrogen gas explosive?

Yes, it's very explosive. It is flammable in the air but only above the concentration of 4,6% by volume. Hydrogen is a molecule with the highest energy density by mass. Nevertheless, hydrogen gas dissolved in water is neither explosive nor flammable, nor is there a mixture of gunpowder and water. Hydrogen water is therefore safe for use. Water (H2O) contains hydrogen that is flammable, and oxygen that fire needs for burning. Water (hydrogen and oxygen bound together) is not flammable and is also used for extinguishing.

Hydrogen is a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, which causes most diseases and premature aging. As the smallest element in the universe, it penetrates parts of the body such as neutrons and cell nuclei that other antioxidants cannot reach.

With every breath, 2% of the oxygen in our body becomes free radicals that cause oxidative stress. Antioxidants turn “bad” oxygen into “good” oxygen. Without them, free radicals harm our cells. Poor nutrition, a polluted environment and a stressful lifestyle increase oxidative stress; as we age, the body also produces fewer antioxidant enzymes.

One glass of hydrogen water a day is very useful to regulate your rate of oxidation, but a daily intake between one and three litres is recommended.

A good hydrogen-water generator runs on electricity, produces at least a therapeutic amount of hydrogen in the water and can heat the water to just over 42°C. It is important to drink warm hydrogen water. If it is cold, the body eliminates it faster, reducing the effect. If it is hot, hydrogen escapes faster, again reducing the effect. Water at the right temperature stays in the stomach for the right amount of time and reaches the small intestine at the optimal point, where the hydrogen is absorbed. This maximizes the effect of hydrogen water.

A device with all the features listed above is available at Zapper-Pro . The V8 has two hydrogen-water generation modes, standard and increased production, and automatically warms the water to 42°C.

Read another article related to hydrogen water about YIN and YANG, mutually dependent opposites:

Night and day; sleep and wakefulness; sun and shade; rest and activity: our lives unfold in cycles of change shaped by apparent “opposites” that in fact support one another, each depending on the other. The same is true within our bodies: the heart beats in cycles of contraction and relaxation. Bodily biochemistry rests on two seemingly opposing processes, oxidation (loss of electrons) and reduction (gain of electrons), both equally important. Like Yin and Yang in Chinese Taoist philosophy, oxidation and reduction arise together and depend on each other: both are essential for healthy bodily function.

There is much talk today about antioxidants – substances that reduce oxidative stress by neutralising free radicals. We get the impression that free radicals (whatever they are) are undoubtedly bad, and that antioxidants (whatever they are) are undoubtedly good. But is the situation really so black and white?

Looking beyond advertising claims and examining the matter more closely reveals a more complex picture, one that closely reflects the Yin–Yang relationship between oxidation and reduction. A healthy human body needs an appropriate balance between free radicals and antioxidants. Free radicals, not only antioxidants, also play an important role in the harmonious functioning of the body.

The basic message is that oxidants and free radicals are not necessarily bad. Optimal health requires both oxidation and reduction; free radicals and antioxidants. The problem is only excess oxidants – known as “oxidative stress” or “redox imbalance”. The latter leads us to the genius of molecular hydrogen in its function of selective antioxidant.
